Definition of goal
A goal is the object of a person's ambition or effort (an aim or desired result).
Characteristics of Goals
- Self-chosen
We need to choose our own goal and be motivated to achieve them.
- Moderately challenging
Goals that will require us to achieve more than we did before.
- Realistic
To set realistic goals, we must evaluate our chances of achieving each goal.
- Measurable
A goal is measurable if you can determine whether you reached it.
- Specific
The more specific your goals are, the more motivated you will be to achieve them.
- Positive
Negative goal statements tend to make you feel that you can't really be successful.
Writing Effective Goal Statements
- Write down what you want to accomplish.
- Write down any obstacles.
- Write down any resources available to you.
- Review and revise your tentative goal statement.
- Polish your goal statement.
